The Meeting of the Magi

Adriaen van Wesel. 1476.

Coming from different parts of the world, the three kings meet on their way to Bethlehem. Together they journey to see the infant Jesus. The 'Meeting' is the work of Adriaen van Wesel, the greatest sculptor of the Northern Netherlands in the Late Middle Ages. In raising the height of the composition he created a lively scene. This group formed part of an impressive altar in St Jan's Cathedral in 's-Hertogenbosch. The whole altar was carved by Adriaen van Wesel and the panels were painted by Jeroen Bosch. The altarpiece related the story of the Virgin Mary and was therefore known as the 'Maria Altar'.
